W. Edward Deming – Profound Knowledge
I had one of those moments recently in conversation with some business students that made me some “hmmmm.” I made a reference to the philosophies of Deming for business and quality and I received blank stares. For a moment, my first reaction was that this is a generational thing, but then I thought wait a minute, Deming is an American statistician, professor, author, lecturer and consultant that transformed and improved U.S. production from the 1950′s on and he earned a great reputation for his work in Japan. He taught management how to improve design and service, product quality, testing, and sales. Though Deming passed in 1993, he work, teachings, and philosophies are still relevant, studies, and he is still thought of as a business giant. If you are not familiar with his work, you should read it because his teachings, philosophies can help in your area of business. Having said all that, here is a great primer for those who are not familiar with Deming to learn more…. Intro to Deming, Intro to Deming Part 2, Intro to Deming Part 3
Are we in control of our own decisions?
We often talk about waking up in the right mind or our own sanity which infers that we are in control, rationale, and make good decisions. I have always thought that conventional wisdom is often suspect and in these times common sense is waining. So, when I came across this Ted Talk from Behavioral economist, Dan Ariely, on are we in control of our own decision and questions whether we are as rationale as we think we are, really resonated with me. Check it out. http://www.ted.com/talks/dan_ariely_asks_are_we_in_control_of_our_own_decisions.html
